Celebrated U.S. rock star Lenny Kravitz a few years ago treated himself to a splendid Magnum Marine 60 with which he unplugged from records and concerts and sped solo among the islands of his beloved Bahamas.

To the contact with the sea and the freedom to sail wherever one wants, perhaps on a high-performance vehicle with refined style, not even rock stars know how to give up. People certainly more accustomed to plowing through crowded stadiums or high-tech recording studios than the waves of the oceans. Yet that enchantment of the marine environment, the sounds of nature, the thrill of traveling along coastlines or reaching a lonely island, conquers them too. And so between a record, a photo shoot and a concert, they decide to become owners of a special boat, just like them.

With Lenny Kravitz, the celebrated U.S. musician, record producer, and actor, it just so happened. A pop-rock icon from the 1990s onward, the creator of big hits such as “Are You Gonna Go My Way,” “I Belong to You” and “Again,” Kravitz is someone who gets the sea under his skin. He was born in New York, but his mom, Roxie Roker, is originally from the Bahamas, and it is in this Caribbean paradise that the artist spends much of the year. He lives on a property in Gregory Town, on the island of Eleuthera, in a rural, wilderness area where he has a strong connection with the local community. He loves to go fishing and go on long Stand Up Paddle hikes.

Magnum 60: a “rock” boat, just like me

And just to experience the sea even more deeply, Lenny Kravitz a few years ago treated himself to a splendid Magnum Marine 60, a luxurious yacht with tapered and very aggressive water lines, an extremely refined look, and on-board spaces that have been taken care of in every single detail. “Being a design enthusiast, my first selection criterion was the style and architecture of the boat,” Kravitz explained, “so after doing extensive research with yacht experts, I found that Magnum Marine produces the safest and highest quality boats. Speed is also an important factor, given the little free time I have between professional commitments. For example, I can go to Bimini for lunch and return in time to spend a full day at the studio.”

Magnum Marine

Founded in 1966 by Dan Aronow, a brilliant designer, industrialist and offshore champion, the brand is distinguished by its open yachts that are true masterpieces of design characterized by great seaworthiness and very high speeds. They are all “custom-made” boats, so each yacht produced is unique, designed based on the owner’s requests and will never have a copy or production run. Some call them the “Aston Martins” of the sea.

Not surprisingly, Magnum Marine’s historical clients include King Juan Carlos of Spain, the King of Sweden, the Emir of Barhein, the royalty of Qatar, the Sultan of Brunei, and the Onassis, Agnelli and Berlusconi families. Magnum Marine is also a supplier to the U.S. Navy. Its yachts became very popular at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s for being used in the first television series titled “Miami Vice.”

3,000 miles in two months, other than status symbol

In 1975 Philip Theodoli, one of America’s richest oil men, became president of Magnum Marine, then in 1990 his wife Katrin Theodoli moved to run the company. She is the one who convinced Kravitz to buy the boat. “Katrin has a thorough knowledge of her product,” says Lenny, “and she is very helpful in managing all aspects of Magnum. She deals with customers who demand and expect the highest quality, which works well for me because my expectations are very high.”

But how does he use his Magnum 60 Mr. Kravitz? “I use my Magnum to travel through the Bahamas,” the artist explains, “it’s definitely not a status symbol that sits moored on my dock. I use the boat a lot. I remember in the first two months alone I put 3,000 miles on it. The truth is, I bought the Magnum 60 so I could get lost in the ocean and leave the world behind.” There you have it, music star or not, that’s the real meaning of the sea….
