At sea safety first is a mantra that should never, ever be set aside. With this in mind at the DAME Design Award 2022 won Ocean Signal’s PLB3, a Personal Locator Beacon that packs a host of “life-saving” functions for boaters into a “little yellow box.” According to the event’s prestigious jury, this accessory is actually the most deserving of the 2022 accessories.

PLB3 Ocean Signal Wins DAME Design Award 2022

The Dame Design Award 2022 is one of the most important awards given in the nautical accessories scene, according to many. Convincing the event jury to give the award overall was the high level of technologies within this PLB, as well as the product design.

Ocean Signal PLB3 RescueME

For those who make long sailings or more simply sail at night, such as going fishing, safety should be the first and foremost concern. We often don’t think about it, but falling into the water at night is not such a remote possibility. Doing so on the high seas, perhaps in sustained wind conditions, can have dire consequences.

Inside the new PLB3 is an AIS device for man overboard detection, a GPS, Cospas-Sarsat locator and Galileo Return Link service , plus it is equipped with visible and infrared beacon lights.

RescueME, when activated, launches an alarm by transmitting an AIS MOB signal to all vessels within VHF range. In addition to indicating a MOB emergency, the device transmits the location to a worldwide network of search and rescue satellites, ensuring high chances of rescue for survivors with operation exceeding 24 hours.

Plus there isOcean Signal’s dedicated app, which can be downloaded to any smartphone and tablet, and thanks to NFC it connects to PLB3. Near Field Communication technology allows the app to be used to test the PLB3 with a cell phone, keeping an eye on the status of the battery-which lasts 5 years-and the operation of all transmitters at all times. Leveraging NFC technology allows the smartphone’s battery to be used rather than the receiver’s, making it possible to avoid “wasting” battery power to monitor the beacon.

The design of the PLB3 is designed to elongate and streamline its shape, allowing the locator to fit inside life jackets as well. Thanks to the built-in clip, the RescueME also attaches very easily to pants, or to accessories such as bags and backpacks.
