Azimut Fly 72 x Ferrari Hypersail

Azimut Yachts joins the project Ferrari Hypersail as a Technical Partner and Official Yachting Partner, bringing design expertise, technology, and a new support vessel designed to accompany the early stages of development of Ferrari’s revolutionary ocean-sailing project.

The collaboration begins in Livorno, where the Azimut facilities house the Hypersail Operations Base, and extends out to sea with the Azimut Fly 72 x Ferrari Hypersail, a custom towboat developed by the shipyard’s Technical Department to support the prototype during its initial flight tests and subsequent test campaigns.

The challenge entrusted to the Azimut team was anything but simple: to build a boat capable of propelling the Ferrari Hypersail prototype to approximately 30 knots during the initial tests—without a mast or sails—so that it could take off and fly on its foils.

To achieve this goal, theAzimut Fly 72’s platform underwent extensive modifications, focusing primarily on the power-to-weight ratio. The first step was a major weight-reduction program, achieved through extensive use of carbon fiber, which reduced the overall weight by as much as 6 metric tons.

As for the propulsion system, however, the power output has been increased to 4,000 cavalli—twice that of the production model—thanks to a solution developed specifically for the Ferrari Hypersail and integrated into the yacht’s structural and systems architecture.

Special attention was also given to the connection between the Azimut Fly 72 and the Ferrari prototype. The yacht has, in fact, been equipped with a specialized tow post, dimensioned through stress analysis to withstand the high static and dynamic stresses generated during towing operations.

The layout of the onboard spaces has also been completely customized to accommodate the team led by Enrico Voltolini and facilitate their work during testing. In subsequent phases, the Fly 72 will also be used to accommodate the crew and for VIP hospitality activities, accompanying Ferrari Hypersail to the project’s major events.

“We are the only brand in the industry with an independent R&D department that is entirely dedicated to developing solutions that do not yet exist on the market,” emphasizes Andrea Antichi, General Manager of Azimut Yachts.

For Ferrari, on the other hand, the goal is to bring the Prancing Horse’s racing DNA to the world of ocean sailing through a project that aims to experiment with new solutions in the field of foiling navigation.
