The sports world is mobilizing to give a signal with respect to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. From soccer to F1 are there have been various stances aimed at limiting or ousting the participation of Russian athletes in sporting events. Yesterday also came the sharp condemnation of theUIM, Union Internationale Motonautique, which decided to cancel all international motor boating events under the auspices of the UIM in Russia and Belarus until the current threats to the Ukrainian people are cleared. The executive committee then also decided to exclude Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials from international powerboat races held around the world under the authority of the IMU until further notice.

UIM excludes Russia and Belarus from competitions

Below is the official note from the IMU, released yesterday.

“The Executive Committee of the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) considered yesterday (March 1, 2022, ed.). the situation created by the military invasion of Ukraine. EXCO UIM members expressed shock at the ruthless initiative taken against a sovereign state. They stressed that UIM strongly condemns all acts of violence perpetrated against civilians and reaffirms its solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

As the world governing body of the sport of powerboating, the IMU is committed to encouraging its practice in all disciplines on a global scale and providing opportunities for athletes to perform. However, in light of the current situation caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, international motorsports events organized and staged under the auspices of the UIM in Russia and Belarus are ruled out until the current threats to the Ukrainian people are cleared. The EXCO UIM has also decided not to invite Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials or allow their participation in international powerboat competitions held worldwide under the authority of the UIM until further notice.

As an IOC-recognized International Sports Federation, the IMU fully supports the initiatives taken so far by the Olympic Movement in the search for a peaceful solution to the current conflict. The UIM Office continues to monitor the situation closely and remains available to member Federations, Athletes and Officials for further guidance.”
