When we talk about outboards, we cannot fail to mention engine architecture. By V6, V8, V10 and V12 we mean the type of internal combustion engine we are talking about. Specifically, the V is the configuration of the cylinders, that is, how they are arranged, and the number is the total number of cylinders we have. A six-cylinder (a V6) will have two banks of three engines. An eight-cylinder will have two banks of four, and so on. Each engine has different characteristics in terms of performance, that’s obvious, but also in terms of sound. Today we put some engine “masters” to the test to see if, by ear, they could tell which outboard it was by its sound alone. Here’s how it went:

In this review we intercepted only Mercury Verado engines, the only ones that go up to 12 cylinders with the largest outboard currently in production. We are talking about Mercury’s 600 horsepower. Among the new additions from the American brand, however, is the new 425-horsepower V10, the latest addition that evolves the 400-horsepower engine block with a whole series of improvements thanks to which the engine has gained torque when revving high. Here is the full video with the new features.
