Who says you need extravagant gear and highly complex techniques to have a fun and productive day of boat fishing—and that a simple “sabiki” isn’t enough? We want to debunk this myth, and to do so, we went to visit an exceptional angler, Marco Volpi, a true icon of sport fishing from a boat with over 30 world titles to his name.

At dawn in the waters off Livorno, Volpi guides us in discovering a simple, straightforward, and incredibly profitable technique: sabiki fishing , in search of mackerel and horse mackerel. The sabiki is a rig equipped with small hooks covered in synthetic leather and fluorescent filaments. In the video, we show you how all it takes is a rod about 3 meters long, a small reel, and a sinker to guarantee a few hours of pure fun—perfect even for younger anglers.

In just a few hours, and with the right strategy, we managed to enjoy a fun fishing trip on a boat that’s accessible to everyone. We also took the opportunity to ask Marco Volpi to tell us how he equipped his fishing boat, the Tuccoli 250 VM, and which engines he chose to fuel his passion: two Suzuki and the indispensable electric bow thruster for when the fishing action really heats up.

The focus of the morning was on midwater fish—such as mackerel, horse mackerel, boghe, and alacce —prey that move in large schools, especially when they enter a feeding frenzy.

When you drop your line vertically over these fish’s feeding grounds or near structures and muddy bottoms, it doesn’t take long for the bites to start coming in. Often, within a matter of seconds, you’ll find all your hooks taken, turning the drop into a veritable spectacle of multiple catches.

Who is Marco Volpi?

Marco Volpi is a true icon of sport fishing from a boat and is considered one of the most famous and decorated anglers in the world. Over the course of his long career in boat fishing, which began when he was a teenager, he has won dozens and dozens of medals, including more than thirty world titles and just as many national titles. Today, he is a leading figure in the industry, a highly respected expert, and a member of professional teams such as the Suzuki Fishing Team, the Tubertini ProStaff, and Garmin.
