Gyroscopic stabilizers have revolutionized the boat experience, making outings more comfortable both when sailing and at anchor. Those who try them often can no longer do without them: they significantly reduce roll, improve predictability of maneuvers, and turn even a day with rough seas into a relaxing experience. We tried all this aboard a Bluegame BG54, equipped with a Smartgyro SG20 unit.

Smartgyro SG20

The principle behind it is that of the gyroscope, a mass that rotates at very high speeds (in this case, up to 9,500 rpm) and counteracts roll-induced perturbations. What really makes the system effective is the electronics developed by Smartgyro: a network of sensors monitors the boat’s movements, adjusting the gyroscope’s response in real time. If the boat is pulled over, the electronics temporarily suspend the counterforce to ensure smooth sailing.

Smartgyro strengths

The BG54 under test, at 16.5 meters long and 29 tons displacement, is “tamed” by an SG20 unit that weighs less than 500 kg. But the range does not stop there: Smartgyro offers six models, from the SG20, for boats starting at 40 feet, to the SG150 intended for yachts over 95 feet. All share advanced technical solutions, such as the vacuum that is essential for reducing friction and, therefore, consumption, and liquid cooling. But, above all, a unique feature of Smartgyro is its modularity: the gyro can be assembled directly on board, a decisive advantage both for refitting or boats with reduced access, and to intervene quickly on board when there is maintenance to be done, reducing downtime and costs.

How much does it cost?

Installing an outrigger is now increasingly considered an investment. It not only increases comfort for the owner and his guests, but also enhances the value of the boat on the second-hand market. In the case of the SG20, the list price is 49,000 euros (excluding VAT and installation). A figure that makes it competitive, in economic terms, against the main competitors in the market, without compromising on technology and reliability.
