Volvo Penta. The whole console in one hand

From Motor Boats 2011, no. 1, February, pp. 44-45.

Volvo Penta’s new electronic controls have a panel with integrated buttons from which all on-board functions are controlled with one finger. And there’s even a handrest….

Already Volvo Penta ‘s IPS transmissions have revolutionized the way we go to sea and, more importantly, maneuver the boat in port, making mooring easier. Today, Volvo Penta is introducing a new set of electronic controls with a buried button panel that allows the driver to control various functions. More specifically, the pilot can select cruise control, single-lever mode, reduced speed mode, power trim assist, towing mode, or pure throttle like with old-fashioned throttles…). These new controls are already available for all Volvo Penta propulsion systems: in addition to the IPS, the Aquamatic and inboard units. The top-mounted control (like the one you see in the photo), has been designed so that the hand rests naturally on the top of the lever, while facilitating access to the controls located in the rear section of the lever: this facilitates, to give an example, the adjustment of cruise control.

A COMPLETE RANGE. Volvo Penta’s IPS transmission system covers a range from 26o to 900 horsepower, capable of equipping yachts up to 100 feet in length.

All this while Volvo Penta has just announced a collaboration agreement with Yamaha Motor to develop an innovative boat control system-all that is known at the moment is that it will be based, at least initially, on technology that Volvo Penta has been exploiting in recent years.
