From the world’s first stabilizer fin with an electric actuator(Stabilis Electra, introduced to the market in 2008) to today, CMC Marine has come a long way. The company founded in Como in 2005 by Alessandro Cappiellonow operates with several headquarters and offices in Italy (Milan, Cascina, Vicopisano, soon Salerno) andabroad (Fort Lauderdale in the United States and Poole in England).

Among the various systems developed and marketed by CMC Marine are steering gears and thrusters, but undoubtedly leading the way are stabilization systems, and in particular fin stabilization systems, which it has installed aboard more than 2,500 vessels over 15 years.

Waveless Stab – CMC Marine

The latest innovation made by CMC Marine is the Waveless stabilizer fin. Waveless‘ Stab line is the most comprehensive range of electrically actuated stabilizers on the market, currently covering the needs of boats and yachts from 12 to 35 meters in length. The system can be installed very easily (it does not require plumbing, as it is electric) on fiberglass, aluminum, wood, and steel hulls, and with the movement of the fins it counteracts the boat’s movements due to sea conditions, whether underway or at anchor, to keep the boat steady and buoyant.

Among the strengths of this new generation of stabilization systems are:

  • Compact volumes and a super-lightweight fin composed of foam on the inside and a highly impact and wear-resistant fiberglass laminate.
  • A Brushless type AC Torque electric motor moves the fins at a speed of up to 90°/s and ensures fast system response.
  • A planetary gearbox that makes the movement of the fins efficient and, most importantly, very quiet.
  • Reduced consumption.

Stabilization for boats from 18 to 35 meters

The Waveless line starts with the “little one” in the house, the Stab 20, with a fin area of just 0.50 m² and an actuator weighing 57 kg. It is an ideal solution for boats between 12 and 18 meters in length, and does not require much energy to operate due to its low power consumption (an average of 0.1 kW at sea and 0.25 kW at anchor).

Continuing we find the Stab 25, a system suitable for boats from 15 to 24 meters, the Stab 30, for boats from 20 to 28 meters, and finally the largest, the Stab 40. This system is designed for boats between 25 and 35 meters in length and consists of a fin that measures between 1.25 and 1.5 m² (depending on the characteristics of the boat on which it will be installed) and an actuator that weighs 108 kg. The absorption, in this case, varies from an average of 0.55 kW at sea to an average of 1.25 kW at anchor.

All Waveless stabilizers are installed with management software also developed by CMC Marine. This software not only provides different modes of operation (such as Night to reduce power consumption and Dock to limit the angle of movement of the fins when moored) but also allows CMC Marine technicians to connect to the system, in real time, remotely to check for malfunctions and thus ensure immediate intervention.
