In a nautical world where (gasoline) outboards are the absolute stars, Scania has taken the stage with a somewhat different model. It is the new 13-liter DI13, unveiled last year at the Shipbuilding, Machinery and Marine Technology show in Hamburg, the flagship of the Scania Super platform and winner of the “Diesel of The Year 2023” award.

It is a 13-liter designed for a wide range of uses, from fast recreation to work (fishing boats, patrol boats), with a power range from 350 to 1,050 hp and, most importantly, a fuel economy improvement of up to 8 percent. At full load it means savings of up to 6.7 L/h of diesel fuel. Not little for engines designed to work for a long time.

Scania DI13 and DI16

Alongside the 13-liter, Scania is displaying the even more massive 16-liter V8, a “heavy duty” solution for heavy-duty applications, peaking at up to 1,150 hp.

Scania and sustainability

The DI13 is IMO Tier III (the most stringent emissions standard) compliant with renewable fuels (synthetic fuels and biodiesel), an attractive plus for shipyards and shipowners looking for measurable reductions in COâ‚‚ without disrupting layouts and shipboard weights.

But these days you can’t not have hybrid and electric solutions on offer as well, and Scania doesn’t go lightly. In fact, an electric traction module with 230 kW continuous power (280 kW peak at 1,500 rpm) that can be combined with 104 or 208 kWh battery packs completes the picture: a setup designed for zero-local-emission use profiles (transfers in sensitive areas, maneuvering in port).

From an operational point of view, Scania also focuses on service capillarity. As Paolo Carri (Scania Italy’s Power Solutions Director) reminds us, network and continuous product upgrading remain essential factors, especially for fleets that grind out many hours/year and need minimal downtime.
