Let us make a provocation. In a world where all brands are focusing on being green, sustainable and pushing hard on technology to do so, perhaps the solution is already in front of us. The gozzo! A boat as old as sailing in the Mediterranean that, starting out as a simple fishing craft, has now also become a very luxurious motorboat, as we see in several cases, both among Sorrentines and Ligurians. Of course, a gozzo is not automatically sustainable, but the one we will look at today is an excellent example for at least three reasons. It is called the G-10 Hybrid by Antico Cantiere del Legno Aprea. Let’s see why.

The sustainable boat in 3 points

When the most classic is also the most “green.” We are talking about a Sorrentine gozzo. And it is not only the propulsion system that makes it “eco.” From the name, precisely, you will have understood that we are dealing with a hybrid boat. No, there is more. What?

Item 1. Sustainable construction

The material is crucial. Let’s start with how it is built: 100 percent wood. No fiberglass, which is polluting and not recyclable. Building this is Mastro Cataldo Aprea (class of 1932), who continues to build wooden hulls in the Marina Grande shipyard in Sorrento the way luthiers make violins. His son Nino has also chosen this tradition and opened a second location in Torre Annunziata.

Step 2. Navigating with low emissions

Talk about philosophy, but with sensible effects on the environment and wallet. Go slowly, no rush. This is always the most effective way to burn less fuel (or use less battery). Don’t get caught up in the frenzy of sinking the throttle, but enjoy the sea around, take it easy. The electric motor, then, allows you to cut them down even further.

Point 3. Long-lived boats

These boats are made to last. By treating it with care, such a unit keeps its charm and structure intact for a very long time. In short, it is not disposable. Is this not true sustainability?
