The school of boating expands the path provided by the nautical institute’s curriculum to better prepare tomorrow’s boating professionals. It is with this in mind that the course designed for kids coming out of middle school or as a post-graduation course for those who dream of working in the middle of the sea aboard boats was born. Here’s how it works.

All free training, including boating license

The idea is simple, but no one had thought of it yet. A 5-year course of study to prepare for work in recreational boating. Plus held by a public school, with support from the Italian Naval League (Lerici branch). For the first time in Italy, a course of study is thus established to prepare a professional figure who is increasingly in demand in the nautical market, but to whom specific training and skills are required. The memorandum of understanding signed by the Institute of Higher Education “G. Capellini – N. Sauro” of La Spezia, the Naval League of Lerici, Isa 10 and the ITS New Technologies for Made in Italy Foundation establishes the first “School of Education for the Recreational Professions.“. With the hope that the experiment may catch on in other schools in Italy and “infect” many institutions.

Those who choose to pursue this training will, at the end of the five years provided, have the qualifications and awareness to face work with charter companies, shipyards, and generally aboard recreational vessels. In fact, in addition to the classic Nautical Institute course, students will be given the opportunity to take a number of other free courses such as a sailing course, safety course, firefighting course or boat license, all of which are taught according to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). Classroom training is combined with boarding periods for students to combine theoretical and practical training and prepare future boating professionals in the field.

What you get at the end of the course

Once you come out of the course, earn all the qualifications and take the necessary courses, you can hold deck and engine room positions on Italian and foreign pleasure boats, as well as professions within shipyards. With this project, on the one hand, an attempt is made to propose a solution to the shortage of highly qualified personnel capable of working as skippers or as installers/testers within construction sites. On the other hand, it allows many young people who are passionate about the sea, and who intend to work at sea and on boats, to have a specific pathway that leads directly to entry into the profession.
