World record for the Tommy One, with Maurizio Schepici and Giampaolo Montavoci aboard. The two pilots put up excellent numbers for the 2020 International Record “Long Distance Offshore – Vulcano-Messina leg.” The record, currently awaiting ratification by the International Powerboating Federation (IMU), took place over the distance of 70 nautical miles in a travel time of 51 minutes and 54 seconds.
Tommy One: world record
On a day marked by a strong sirocco wind, the two pilots aboard the Tommy One did not give an inch. Despite having three attempts available for the record, the crew achieved the goal on the first stroke, despite a more careful first phase of sailing with the boat held more quietly. Thus, conditions did not make a difference on the record attempt as told by Maurizio Schepici of Messina. “Up to Milazzo, we found one meter of wave. Then with the sea a little less rough, we were able to push hard. I dedicate this record to all my fellow citizens.” Also starring was the Neptune Marina, which in the days of preparation was the organizational beating heart that allowed the event to take place.
