Yamaha Motor scores a major coup by acquiring German electric motor manufacturer Torqeedo. The agreement with Deutz AG-owner of the Torqeedo brand-will result in Yamaha’s acquisition of all corporate shares in the marine electric motor manufacturer, a segment leader with more than 100,000 units produced since 2005.
Yamaha becomes leader in electric marine engines
Among Torqeedo ‘s most popular engines is certainly the Travel, an outboard that in its latest version presented at Mets Amsterdam 2023 combines a 1,100 W motor (comparable to a 3 hp thermal) with a 1,080 Wh battery. Weighing 11.6 kg, the Torqeedo Travel in the Essential package is suitable for propelling tenders, dinghies and small boats up to 1.5 tons.
For nearly 20 years the company, highly recognizable by the orange color of its motors, has pioneered both research and development and mass production of electric marine motors. As well as holding several patents in the field of outboard and inboard electric motors, propellers and electric systems. With the acquisition, subject to obtaining the approvals and permits required by current regulations, including competition laws, Yamaha Motor will be able to offer its customers a diverse range of options, combining Torqeedo’s electric range with the classic range of thermal engines.

In this sense, this is an important step in the brand’s long-term strategy, which demonstrates that it is moving in the direction of respecting the environment and the seas. The acquisition of Torqeedo will enable Yamaha to accelerate industrial transformations that plan to achieve carbon neutrality in the marine industry, including the creation of a new electric propulsion line. Combining the know-how of Yamaha and Torqeedo will also result in a line of mid-range electric outboards-a segment that is somewhat lacking in the market now.
